GPD G1 : The Smallest eGPU with OcuLink and AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT

GPD has unveiled its latest offering, the GPD G1 eGPU. The eGPU was announced alongside the highly-anticipated Win Max 2 2023. The eGPU is boasting an RDNA 3-based Radeon RX 7600M XT GPU and it is a compact powerhouse with 32 MB of Infinity Cache, 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, and 32 Compute Units.

The G1’s dimensions of 225 x 111 x 29.8 mm purportedly make it the world’s most compact eGPU, a claim that becomes more plausible when you consider the array of ports it houses. These include 2x DisplayPort 1.4a, 1x HDMI 2.1, 1x OcuLink (SFF-8612), a power switch, SD 4.0 card reader, 3x USB 3.2 Type-A, and 1x USB 4 port.

However, a critical caveat to note is the functionality limitation of the USB Type-A ports and SD card reader when the eGPU is connected via OcuLink. Despite this, OcuLink remains a potent feature, boasting an impressive 63 Gbps via PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 3.0 x4.

The GPD G1 comes with a TGP of 120 W and a built-in 240 W GaN power supply unit PSU, which necessitates a small but effective active cooling solution. All of these features pack into a feather-light 0.92 kg weight.

GPD has indicated that it will make the G1 available directly to consumers through a crowdfunding campaign. However, details remain scarce, and we’re still in the dark about the exact dates and pricing.
