vivo showcases satellite communication prototype

vivo has showcased its satellite communication prototype at the MWC Shanghai 2023.

The demonstration highlighted the company’s commitment to advancing connectivity solutions and bridging the digital divide. Based on the vivo X90 Pro+ handset, the prototype incorporates cutting-edge technology to enable two-way satellite communications in areas without terrestrial cellular network coverage.

Why it matters in the Philippines

Despite the significant expansion of mobile network coverage across the Philippines, certain remote regions, particularly Mindanao, still lack reliable cellular connectivity. In response to this challenge, vivo’s satellite communication prototype opens up new possibilities for Filipinos to stay connected even in the most remote and inaccessible locations, such as wilderness areas, oceans, and forests.

The satellite communication prototype developed by vivo is built on the vivo X90 Pro+ handset and leverages custom modifications to support 3GPP R17 non-terrestrial network (NTN) two-way satellite communications. It incorporates an internal antenna and a radio frequency (RF) baseband integrated solution. Moreover, the prototype is compatible with the Inmarsat/Tiantong-1 satellite system, making it capable of operating in various scenarios.

Unveiling the V8821 SoC

At the heart of vivo’s satellite communication prototype lies the V8821, the first satellite communication system-on-a-chip (SoC) developed by the company. This revolutionary technology enables communication via L-band Inmarsat and S-band Tiantong satellites. Furthermore, the V8821’s flexible hardware configuration allows for the integration of other high-orbiting satellite systems, meeting the communication needs of diverse environments such as the ocean, urban fringe, and remote mountain areas where traditional cellular networks struggle to provide coverage.

Moreover, the V8821 SoC brings numerous benefits to the table, including improved deployment efficiency and cost savings. Its flexible hardware configuration allows customers to optimize existing solutions and leverage hardware resources effectively, reducing both deployment costs and time consumption. This adaptability ensures that it can be seamlessly integrated into various applications and environments.

Looking Ahead

With the successful demonstration of the satellite communication prototype, vivo has positioned itself as a pioneer in satellite connectivity solutions. The company’s commitment to technological innovation aims to bridge the connectivity gap in remote areas, enabling individuals and communities to stay connected, informed, and empowered. As vivo’s satellite communication technology progresses, it has the potential to revolutionize communication possibilities, not only in the Philippines but also in other regions facing similar connectivity challenges.
